1. Issues Users May Encounter
After updating to iOS 18, some users have reported that VPN fails to start, with error messages appearing (as shown below).
This is due to changes in iOS 18’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) permissions, requiring additional authorization for the app to activate the VPN configuration.
2. What is Mobile Device Management (MDM)?
MDM (Mobile Device Management) is a solution used to manage and secure mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Its main functions include device monitoring, application management, and remote support. Through MDM, businesses and organizations can centrally manage devices, reduce security risks, and improve management efficiency and productivity.
3. How to Check if Your Device is Under MDM Control?
Method 1:
Open “Settings” and check the top of the screen for a message saying “This iPhone is supervised by ‘XXX’.”
Method 2:
Go to “Settings” → “General” → “VPN & Device Management.”
Check if an MDM profile is installed in the configuration profiles (the MDM tool name may vary; be aware of the differences, the image is for reference only).
4. How to Enable VPN Configuration on a Device Under MDM Control?
If you confirm that your device is under MDM control, please contact your device administrator for further assistance. Each MDM platform manages permissions differently, so the administrator should refer to the platform’s specific documentation for guidance. Typically, the relevant permissions can be found in the MDM console with options like:
“Create VPN configuration”
“allowVPNCreation”
After the administrator adjusts the permissions, you can restart the VPN app to check if the VPN configuration can be activated successfully. If the issue persists, please feel free to contact our technical support team via the bottom-right corner for further assistance.
